Maximizing the Benefits of the OD/ MD Practice Model

I am passionate about guiding practices on how to structure the OD/MD practice model to promote a collaborative approach to patient management. The unique needs of each practice is tailored by uncovering areas of opportunities through evaluation of current practices during a site visit.

Here is what we will focus on:

  • Managed Care: How is the practice utilizing the skills, abilities, and training of the OD team to free up time in the MDs schedule to complete activities that are out of the Optometrists scope of practice.
  • Offerings: Is the practice intentional around creating and evolving your OD/MD practice model as new technologies in diagnostic and treatment options emerge in the market? Is there an opportunity for your MDs to have their non-surgical Diabetic, Glaucoma and dry AMD and dry eye patients see your OD for care? How can regular MD/OD collaboration/training sessions set the stage to evolve how you practice?
  • Accountability: Everyone needs a mentor and a leader to hold them to account for following practice protocols and policies. Who is your OD team reporting to? What does it look like? Does it align with how the rest of your team reports to a leader? If not, why?
  • Streamlining: Is there a streamlined process for your OD team when it comes to choosing products for your patients or recommending surgical intervention? Does it align with your mission and values?
      • Is your team offering best technology in, for example contact lenses to promote patient compliance and eye health. Do you have rules around which products your OD team offer your patients based on what you believe is best for the patient and best for your business? (Check out your numbers on the 2-wk lenses dispensed by your team. Statistics show this is abused by patients and worn for at least a month. This lens is old technology bad for business and more importantly your patients.)
      • Do you have a systemic approach to how your OD team recommend glasses & over the counter supplements from the lane to ensure your patients receive the full cycle of care from your office, resulting in a premium patient experience?

Together, we can make changes in a collaborative manner that works for the whole team to improve patients outcomes from both a health and patient experience perspective and in turn increases the businesses bottom line exponentially
